Epsilon Editor's review
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.I've been an emacs user for years. I'm not particularly happy with any of the versions of it ported to the Mac, so I figured I'd check out Epsilon. It's dreadful. The basic editor is fine, but it's an awful port to the Mac. The UI is basically text-based - that is, it's a window where everything in it is just drawn with plain text. Not just character based, like any other emacs or Vi port I've seen, but totally plain. No text styles, no coloring of the status bars, etc. When you split the epsilon window, you get a line of "---"s, indistinguishable from the text in the edit buffers. If this were free software, I'd give it a bad review. But this isn't free - they want $250. That isabsolutely insane. On the mac, you can Aquamacs, GnuEmacs, GVim, Viper,Xemacs, or Smultron for free; any of them is dramatically better than this piece of junk. You could buy five copies of the vastly superior textmate for what this costs.
