The HAL (Heuristically programmed ALgorithmic Computer) 9000 computer is an artificial intelligence and the onboard computer on the spaceship Discovery 1. HAL acts like he has genuine emotions. And, of course he's programmed that way to make it easier for us to talk to him. But as to whether he has real feelings is something we don't think anyone can truthfully answer.
